A question that comes to the mind of almost every married woman that can you have a period and still be pregnant? This is not your fault that you worry about such things because it is the people around you who build this problem in you by sharing their personal experiences like throughout her pregnancy she had periods. The question is still uncertain that can you become pregnant and still have your periods?

Is it True That You Can Have Your Periods and Be Pregnant?

It is a lie that you can have your periods while you are pregnant. It can be something else but not the periods. The science says that when a woman is pregnant, the body starts producing a gonadotropic hormone which is responsible for the cessation of periods. While, this is not wrong that some woman experience bleeding during their bleeding, but technically it’s not periods it is called as breakthrough bleeding. This bleeding is associated with vaginal discharge only which people misunderstand for periods.

The Menstrual Cycle

This is a truth that one will only have periods when she is not pregnant. During the menstrual cycle, the wall of the endometria is loaded with blood thus waiting for the egg to get fertilized. If the woman does not conceive the blood layer surrounding the endometria is shed off resulting in the discharge of blood, and the result will be periods and no pregnancy.

pregnancy and periods

When a woman is pregnant the body starts producing a gonadotropic hormone which is responsible for the cessation of periods.

Menstrual Problem During Pregnancy

The researchers are still trying to figure out the reason behind bleeding during pregnancy. The exact cause is unidentifiable, but there are proposed reasons which shall be discussed in the subsection.

What Can Cause Bleeding?

Well, now it is sure that this is not the periods that you experience during your pregnancy. The bleeding can be due to multiple reasons like:

  • Bleeding Due to Implantation

Sometimes you experience a mild bleeding, but this is due to the implantation. During the implantation bleeding, you will witness the same symptoms that you use to get during the regular heavy periods. These symptoms can be cramps, nausea or blotting. Implantation bleeding should not be taken as a mistake for the periods because this only happens when the ovum gets fused with the cell lining.

  • Imbalance in Hormonal

Heavy and light bleeding entirely depends on the hormones that control the menstrual cycle. During the early pregnancy, the hormones change according to the current condition of the body. This imbalance in hormones can lead to bleeding during the first trimester. This is not the period but is called as pregnancy bleeding.

  • Contraceptives & Pregnancy

Well, many women happen to get pregnant while they are taking contraceptives and cause of this they experience irregular bleeding.

Some Other Causes

  • Sub-Chronic Bleeding

During the pregnancy, the body forms small clogs at the edge of the placenta. Usually, this happens on its own, and the issue is solved with time. These little clogs may be responsible for the period like bleeding, but in reality, there is nothing to worry about because you can get periods when you are pregnant.

  • Residual Bleeding

Residual bleeding happens when the placenta is not firmly attached to the wall. So with time the hormones cast off the other parts and result into bleeding. This also happens during the first trimester.

  • Cervical Bleeding

If during pregnancy you have intercourse then you are likely to be getting the cervix bleeding. This occurs due to the sensitivity of the cervix. If this is the problem, then you should avoid any further intercourse.

  • Bleeding is an Indication of What Situations

You should not take the bleeding during pregnancy lightly. It can be an indication of the following conditions:

Miscarriage

Almost 20 to 30 percent of pregnant women are likely to get pregnancy bleeding during the first three months. However, this bleeding can also be an indication of the miscarriage. If it is the miscarriage, then you will also suffer from the following symptoms

  • Intense cramps
  • Pain
  • Tissue discharge
  • Heavy bleeding

Miscarriages can have many remains, but some of the prominent ones include: the pregnancy is not healthy, and the fetus is not developing as it should, or it can be due to any injury or accident. Miscarriages are sad, but it does not mean one cannot become a mother in the future. Despite the miscarriages, the mother remains healthy and can conceive anytime.

Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy refers to a situation in which a mother has conceived, but the fetus has fertilized to some other location than the uterus. The fetus can migrate to fallopian tubules due to an injury or infection. Ectopic pregnancy is not a common phenomenon, and only 1 out of 100 cases are reported for ectopic pregnancy.

This also happens with women who have undergone pelvic surgery. The symptoms of the ectopic pregnancy are similar to the miscarriages:

  • Intense cramps
  • Diminished levels of gonadotropic hormone
  • Severe radiating pain in stomach

So ectopic pregnancy can also be a reason for the bleeding during the pregnancy.

Molar Pregnancy

Gestational trophoblastic disease refers to a condition in which a mole or a cyst can develop in your womb rather than an embryo. Well the molar pregnancy has the following features like:

  • High levels of gonadotropic hormone
  • Heavy bleeding
  • The heartbeat of the fetus cannot be heard
  • Cyst appears in the uterus
  • Pain in uterus

A molar pregnancy can also lead to bleeding during the pregnancy and is also taken as a mistake in the place of periods.

Well, now it is quite clear that one cannot get periods while she is pregnant. There can be many other underlying causes which we have already discussed above. So whenever you experience any of these conditions only rush to the doctor and get them identified or diagnosed. These problems do not decrease your chances of becoming a mother, nor they halt the pregnancy, but they should be rectified as soon as they are diagnosed and identified.

There was a time when I was keen to know the mystery behind perfect cooking of chefs. But, it was only my assumption that they have some special tricks and ingredients which they conceal from others to be paramount and possess unique flavor of their dishes. Like me, many other people may also assume this. But thanks to the world of information, I mean to say the internet, it is no more a mystery now. You will wonder to know that it is not magic; it’s all about just perfect measuring of ingredients. Everyone can do cooking perfectly if he/she knows how to measure perfectly.

Now, you’re thinking about the measuring tools and gadgets that professionals use in cooking measurement. A layman typically does not have these things than how they can measure in the same way as professionals do. Yeah, it’s true that chefs have experience and apparently efficient tools as well, but it is not a surprising thing. You can also measure the cooking ingredients correctly to make your recipe perfect. If you are a learner in the culinary world, you must know the cooking measurement. Measuring fluids and dry ingredients in tablespoons and cups is a most convenient way. Let me combine both together. It will be obviously helpful to you. Here, I’m going to explain, “How many tablespoons in a cup?”

Difference Between US & UK Cup Standards

Before heading towards the explanation of basic conversion of tablespoons in a cup, it’s important to know that there are two most common systems of cup measurements which are metric and US standard. The size of a cup varies in different regions of the world according to the custom use of cup and needs. Therefore, measurement of fluids and solids may vary also. Let’s have a look on measurement according to the US and Metric standards.

US Tablespoon and Cup

Till you know how many tablespoons in a cup, you should be aware that the traditional US tablespoon as a unit volume is equal to;tablespoons per cup liquid

=4 fluid drams = 3 tablespoons =14.8 ml

  • US customary cup is defined as half of a US pint.
1 US standard cup= 16 US tablespoons = 48 US teaspoons = 8 US fluid ounces = 236.5882365 ml

Metric Tablespoon and Cup

The people who have metric cups for measurement would also want to know a super easy method of conversion of tablespoons in a cup. Here is a detail about a metric cup.

Metric tablespoon in terms of measurement is equal to;tablespoons per cup
=4.06 Metric fluid drams = 3 Metric teaspoons =15 ml
  • A metric cup is usually defined as;
= 250 ml = 16 2⁄3 International tablespoons = 50 international teaspoons =8.45 US customary fluid ounces

Dry Measurement vs Liquid Measurement

If you want to measure how many tablespoons in a cup, it is crucial to understand the measures of both solids and liquids in any measurement system. Dry measurement cups are filled exactly to the top and then leveled off with a knife or a straight edge. Whereas in the measurement of liquids into cups, you can’t fill the cup right up to the top. For liquids generally, pour spout term is used which means you fill the cup according to the gradation on the side of the cup. Usually, measurement of a liquid cup is exactly same to the dry cup. Liquid measurements are not only used for measuring milk, water, and oil but also for other ingredients such as; sugar flour and spices, Etc. the units of liquid measurement are milliliter, teaspoon, tablespoon, fluid ounces, cup, quart, and gallon.

Remember that the fluid ounce is different from the weight ounce. In America, ingredients are usually measured by volume, whereas, others commonly measure them by weight.

For more convenience to measure liquid and dry ingredients for cooking a table is given below.

Cup Tablespoon Cup Tablespoon
1 16 5.25 84
¼ 4 5.5 88
½ 8 5.75 92

  • Torn cartilage
  • Arthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Injury
  • Broken bones
  • Cervical radiculopathy
  • Signs of Pinched Nerve

The primary mechanism of Pinched Nerve in Shoulder is that when the bones offshoot around the spinal cord. The spinal cord has padded disc like structure in between which are known to provide protection against wear and tear, shock and even reduces friction. The bone offshoots only when these shock absorber discs begins to weaken up. As we age, the vertebras are compressed, and the discs lose their flexibility. Although these bone off growth was formed to make the bone stronger, in reality, they put immense pressure on the spinal cord.

How to Diagnose a Pinched Nerve?

If you feel any kind of shoulder pain, then you must get it examined thoroughly. The doctor will conduct a physical analysis of your shoulder and neck region to get to the root cause of the pinched nerve in shoulder. During the examination, the doctor will come up with many signs that will guide him to the main cause of the problem. The tweaked nerve will always cause pain in only one of the two shoulders, and the pain will be radiating that may radiate to the neck region. The pain may worsen up in the case of exertion or active work.

Pinched nerve may cause difficulty in moving your neck to the sideways. The feeling is terrible you will always feel that someone is inserting needles in your shoulders. Imaging Testing

Pinched nerve may also require x-ray or MRI.X-ray will present a complete detailed picture of the nerves and the bones, however, it does not tell anything about the discs. It will also tell about the off shoot growth of the bones and also about the tapering of the discs. X-RAY moreover, is efficient in telling about arthritis and bone related injuries.

On the other hand, MRI scan is a right approach for a pinched nerve. The magnetic resonance induction technique is useful because it does not produce any harmful radiation nor it causes any pain. MRI will also tell that what is the current condition of the discs and nerves of the spinal cord. MRI can detect the torn or injured ligaments and tendons.

Oats have been known as outstanding and a nutritious grain from ancient times because of its various health benefits. A study has also been conducted to find out does oatmeal have gluten or not?

For some of you, gluten may be a new word, and a question may arise why gluten is harmful.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a family of proteins and is basically present in food grains. The chewy and stretchy texture of the bread is because of the presence of gluten. There is an extensive list of what contains gluten. Grains and food that contain gluten are wheat, rye, barley, pasta, bread, noodles, crackers, etc.

Why is Gluten Harmful?

Individuals who are sensitive to gluten, for them gluten intake can result in gluten allergy. In gluten, allergy body becomes unable to digest gluten protein. For gluten sensitive individuals it becomes difficult for the digestive enzymes that are present in the gut to break down gluten. As a result of gluten sensitivity, celiac disease occurs.

In celiac disease, an autoimmune response is produced by the body against gluten which results in damage to the intestinal lining. For such individuals, a gluten-free diet is the best choice to avoid such health issues.

Gluten Free Diet:

Oat also belongs to a class of grains, and it can be used as a substituent of wheat, but there is again a lot of confusion that; is oatmeal gluten free?

The research was conducted at University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center; to answer this question “Does oatmeal have gluten?”

Results of this study suggested that oats are gluten free as they do not belong to the type of wheat, barley or rye grain, which contain gluten. In oats instead of gluten, avenin protein is present.

Oats naturally do not contain any gluten but it becomes difficult to answer a question “is oatmeal gluten-free?” when we consider the way how oats are grown in fields.

Sometimes oats are grown on the same field where previously gluten-containing grains like wheat, barley and rye were grown because of this gluten grain grows with oat and contaminate the quality of oat crop. Oat crop, therefore, does not remain 100% gluten-free. Sometimes oats also become contaminated during the packaging process, as same equipment are used to package both wheat and oat.

The question that arises next in one’s mind does oatmeal have gluten if they are labeled organic. Oats gluten free surety is not judged by its organic labeling. Always check the gluten-free certification label even if you buy organic oats.

gluten free oatmeal

Oat also belongs to a class of grains, and it can be used as a substituent of wheat.

Gluten Buying Tips

When you are in the supermarket and about to buy oats again a question that arises is, does oatmeal have gluten? Here some tips are shared that will help you to buy100% gluten free oat:

  • Do not buy from bulk bins as same equipment is used to scoop out wheat and oats and can result in contamination.
  • Always check the “Gluten-free” tag or label on oats before buying them.
  • Avoid buying or eating oatmeal from a restaurant because there is a high risk of contamination.

Health Benefits of Oats:

Through various studies, it has been found that Gluten-free diet usually has an inadequate amount of fiber, vitamin B, folate and minerals such as iron, magnesium, selenium, manganese and zinc. However, oat contains all vitamins and minerals in adequate amount. Oats are also an excellent source of fiber.

Moreover, oats can improve risk factors for heart disease by maintaining cholesterol level, can aid in weight loss process and prevent diabetes as well by properly regulating blood sugar and insulin level.

If Oats are Gluten free, then what’s the reason for stomach ache?

Sometimes people develop symptoms like gastrointestinal troubles, bloating, cramp or diarrhea even if they eat gluten-free oat. The reason is a high level of fiber present in oats and can be a problem for individuals who aren’t used to high fiber diet. After some time digestive system adjusts to high fiber food and such symptoms gets vanished.

Drinking lots of water helps to resolve such digestive problems. Soaking oats overnight also contribute to addressing such issues.

Varieties of Oats

Steel-Cut Oats

They are known as Irish or Scottish oats. Have less impact on blood sugar level. Have chewy texture.

Rolled Oats

Oats are passed through steamed rollers and pressed to make them soft. After pressing, they are dried. Cook in less time than steel oats. Oats Gluten is nothing to worry about now.

Old-Fashioned Oats

They are also rolled oats but have a different name.

Oat Flour

Oats are in the form of powder. Oat flour is passed through steaming, rolling and pressing phase.  Oat flour is not a good choice because there are chances that it can elevate blood sugar level. Before moving towards gluten free diet and using oats as a meal, it is a good practice to consult your doctor. Your doctor will properly guide you how to use oats as a meal and what amount of oatmeal is suitable for you. Now the answer is pretty much clear regarding does oatmeal have gluten or not.

Blood cupping therapy is trending nowadays because of the Rio Olympics 2016, where you must have observed round red circles across the body of athletes including gymnast Alex Naddour, American swimmer Natalie Coughlin and Micheal Phelps-Olympian with the most number of gold medals. Red circles all over the skin of Phelps that were seen in this season of Rio Olympics were due to blood cupping therapy.

This ancient method was used by Chinese. Chinese therapy was introduced in 300 B.C and from that time cupping has been proved as a beneficial therapy for human body and is being practiced. It is also termed “Hijama” which is an Arabic word meaning ‘drawing out.’ Prophet Muhammad also laid emphasis on cupping and rendered it as a cure to many diseases.

This technique is not only limited to Olympics even world famous celebs are benefitting from this method including Victoria Beckham, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jennifer Aniston and recommended it.

How Does it Work?

According to researchers 70% of the body diseases occur due to improper blood circulation which causes damage to the vital organs resulting in illness. With the passage of time the blood in our vessels starts to accumulate harmful toxins. If such toxins are not eliminated from the body they will make a person more prone to the diseases and it is less likely that the individual will recover rapidly. So these therapies works by sucking these toxins and unwanted blood from the body that is no longer required, leading towards paired circulation. Moreover it is a non-invasive and cheap method of curing different diseases.

There are various ways to perform it. In this therapy individual cups are placed on the skin by a therapist for few minutes, as a result suction is created. Different varieties of cups are used in cupping treatment i.e. Glass, Bamboo, Earthen ware and silicone. Method that is most traditionally used comprises of glass cup in which burning cotton bud or herb is placed, when the burning cotton bud cools down it creates a vacuum.

Cupping therapy is further divided into three categories which include:

  • Wet cupping
  • Dry cupping
  • Fire cupping

Wet cupping

Wet cupping is also known as Chinese bloodletting. In this method blood is drawn from the skin of a person that is why it is given the name ‘wet cupping’.

This technique removes “stagnant” blood from a person’s body. Firstly cups are applied for few minutes to create suction and then small incisions are made. Afterward, cups are used again and again to draw any poisonous or stagnant blood into the cups.

Dry cupping

In this method, blood is drawn out from the body because no incisions are made. Cups having 1 to 3 inches diameter are applied over the skin to create suction. Dry cupping provides a massage-like an effect. Mostly silicone cups are used in the dry cupping technique.

Now therapist prefers silicone cups over other because they can be used easily over areas having sensitive skin like face and cause fewer bruises.

Fire Cupping

Fire cupping provides a person a form of deep tissue massage.

There are two techniques of fire cupping. The practitioner can put a cotton ball into alcohol, ignite the cotton ball and then rapidly put it inside a cup, after few seconds burning cotton ball is removed from the cup and cup is applied to the skin. In another method practitioner does not use cotton ball, they simply apply coat of alcohol inside the cup, then lighten it up and apply to skin.

Due to fire, air is removed from the cup and suction is created. Sometimes practitioners apply oil to the skin of a person before cups are placed to from a firm seal.

benefits of cupping therapy

Cupping Therapy Benefits:

There is an infinite list of advantages.

  • It is traditionally practiced for the purpose of detoxification of the blood.
  • Other benefits include the treatment of the primary circulatory diseases, pain, cough, backache problems, infertility, and cancer, etc.
  • However, Olympians are using this because it is believed that it can cause the increase in the blood level as well as nutrient supply to the muscles of the body.

Is This Therapy a Safe Approach?

Fire cupping therapy results in red round marks. From word fire it comes in one’s mind that is this technique painful? The answer is “NO”. This method is not painful. Then next question arises that does this technique has any side effect? The general answer is “NO” again. This method has been proved beneficial and standard procedure should be followed to prevent any significant side effect. Minor side effects that can occur include mild discomfort, burns, bruices, swelling and skin infection.

Wet cupping if not done results in adverse side effects properly, due to this issue it has been declared illegal in California, America.

Is This Therapy Proving Beneficial?

Is this treatment proving beneficial to the athletes or it’s just in their brains? It is still an unanswered question.

It is a common practice for athletes to give a try to new therapies and treatments that can relieve pain. In 2008 and 2012, athletes were seen with a bright adhesive tape on their shoulders, backs, and abs. This tape was known as Kinesio tape; a Japanese citizen developed this claiming that it can reduce pain, and it can support muscles as well.

Similarly, in 2009, copper bracelets were seen in athletes arm. They wore those bracelets with the belief that it would improve their performance.

A thorough research needs to be done on this therapy to find the benefits and potentials threat of this method.

Side effects of Cupping Therapy

The major issue of this therapy is that there is no standardization. No rules and regulations are specified by any centralized body. Currently, this therapy is done by individuals who are from massaging profession or other similar lower medical profession.According to experts, people with certain diseases such as hypertension i.e. elevated blood pressure and diabetes should avoid cupping therapy.
